RESOURCES

Coming to terms with a PCD diagnosis

Supportive, practical guidance for families after a new diagnosis.

Common feelings and challenges

• Shock, grief or worry about the future
• Balancing work, siblings, appointments and treatment routines
• Financial pressure and reduced support from wider networks
• Feeling misunderstood by others who don’t see the daily load

What can help in the first months

• Write down questions as they come up and take them to your next clinic visit.
• Consider counselling support – your GP can refer you to local services.
• Use your support network (partner, family, friends, neighbours) and accept practical help.
• Ask your respiratory team who your key contact is (often a nurse specialist).

You are not alone

Many families feel overwhelmed, isolated or anxious at first.

PCD can be managed, and most people can live largely normal lives.

It is okay for parents to react differently - both responses are valid.
